Uncomfortable Conversations

Who: Melanie Hulbert, Eun-A Park, Ralph Hanke, and Todd Jesse

When: Thursday, March 14, 2019 @ 4:00pm

Where: University Center’s South Ballroom

Why: To discuss different areas of privilege honored in this county be it racial/ethnic, religion, educational, and/or sexual orientation. Uncomfortable Conversations is difficult dialogue, civil discourse, that allows us to have those conversations we don’t normally have with each other. It is a time where discomfort is welcomed and tough conversations are encouraged as long as they are productive. It fosters an environments that promotes inclusion as well as diverse opinions, controversial or not.

What we need from you: Attendance! I am aware that this event is the week before Spring Break. If you can, encourage your students to attend this event. I know that’s easier said than done, but I believe that difficult dialogue is crucial to college students. It allows them to find their own values and beliefs by thinking critically and challenging them to understand perspectives of those who are different from them.

In addition, we’d like to have your attendance. This event is just not for students. It is an opportunity to give professors a break away from the front of the classroom and gives you a chance to be a student as well. It is encouraged for administrators, faculty, and staff to not only attend, but to also engage in these tough conversations WITH our students as students of life; we are learning together.
