The Western Colorado University Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band have been hard at work preparing an exciting, diverse concert program this semester. Though we’d love to play live for a packed house, that’s not prudent right now (or allowed) so we’ve focused our energy on creating some slick video recordings for your enjoyment. We’ll show the video in the Quigley Concert Hall on March 7; doors will open at 3 PM.

Since capacity is limited to 50 attendees, we've started a guest list for the watch party. Contact the Department of Music Administrative Assistant Anna Flynn at or 970.943.3093 if you want to be added to the list. If we still have spots available at showtime, those will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Mask wearing and physical distancing absolutely required.

If you prefer to view at home (perhaps in your pajamas while sipping some tea), the video will be released on the Department of Music Facebook page and YouTube page at 3 PM as a Premiere event. Invite your family, friends, enemies… really anyone with an internet connection who likes music. Leave a comment if you hear something you like!

The program is below. Enjoy the show!

Percussion Ensemble

» Samba Enredu
(arr. Justis) – This energetic and groovy program opener uses the rhythms and techniques of Rio samba schools. Feel free to dance along!

» Karakurenai (Andy Akiho) – A curious, minimalistic work where different layers of musical time and melodic fragments diverge and coalesce.

» Marimba Spiritual (Minoru Miki) – The ferocity of Japanese Taiko drumming tradition collides spectacularly with marimba in this tour-de-force concertino featuring new(ish) Department of Music faculty member Dr. Ben Justis.

» Scuttlebutt (Jim Casella) – Groovy, expressive, and dramatic… you’ll hear why this piece is the performers’ favorite of the bunch!

Steel Band

From Soca to Songo to Reggae, these calypso-tinged tunes need no explanation. Kick back and relax as we bring a bit of the tropics to the Gunnison Valley!

» Songo Frigio (Ben Justis)

» Yellow Bird (arr. Grissom)

» Down With It (Matt Ehlers)

» All Ah We (Tom Miller)
