Featuring Bruce Bartleson and Dave Primus
Many of you are probably aware of Old Monarch Pass that preceded the modern paved Highway 50 pass. However, for many years, an earlier route was widely used that traverses up the South Arkansas Valley through Maysville, Garfield, Monarch Park and up over the Continental Divide through what is now the middle of the Monarch Ski area. This was an 1880’s stagecoach road and evidence is seen of construction that is over 130 years old.
This tour will focus on the eastern side of the pas. After leaving from Western, we will start from Poncha Springs and travel west. Participants can learn the history and geology of the east flank of the Sawatch Range, with special attention given to the original route of this now abandoned stagecoach road along with interesting sidelights into the people and events that developed this route.
Lunch and transportation are provided, but participants are urged to bring their own water, hiking shoes and rain gear and be prepared to spend a day at over 11,000 feet in the high mountains of Colorado.
