Tour of Aberdeen Quarry and Richardson Road

Featuring David Primus and Jim Barry

Take a tour with Dave Primus and Jim Barry southwest of Gunnison to the historic Aberdeen Quarry, built in 1889 to provide granite for the state capitol in Denver. Along the way, hike and see remnants of the Richardson Road, a freight wagon route built in 1874 to transport coal from the Richardson Coal Mine to Lake City.

At Aberdeen, see the quarry and remains of equipment and the railroad spur, then take a short hike to the town site. Handouts are provided showing historical maps and pictures.

Participants should wear hiking shoes and bring a day pack containing water, snacks, wind/rain jackets and sun protection. Cost includes transportation and a sack lunch.
