In school, you’re rewarded for individual performance. In the real world, no one succeeds alone. The uncomfortable truth? Many brilliant ideas fail—not because the engineering was wrong, but because the team wasn’t aligned. Drawing from his experience leading high-stakes medical device development programs, Ken Roggow shares lessons from the front lines of product innovation, where poor communication is costly, trust accelerates progress, and adaptability separates teams that ship from teams that stall. This talk challenges students across engineering, business, healthcare, and the sciences to rethink what will actually define their careers. Technical skill may get you in the door—but your ability to build trust, admit what you don’t know, and work through uncertainty with others will determine whether your work truly makes an impact.

Ken Roggow is the Director of Engineering at Paragon 28, where he leads teams developing innovative orthopedic solutions for foot and ankle care. His work focuses on combining strong engineering fundamentals, thoughtful design, and effective teamwork to bring clinically meaningful products to market. Prior to Paragon 28, Ken spent eight years in spinal orthopedic device development, gaining experience across design, manufacturing, and commercialization. He is passionate about how engineering teams work together under real-world constraints — and how strong collaboration ultimately drives better outcomes for both patients and engineers.

Join Gretchen King, executive editor at High Country News, Alyssa Pinkerton of The Colorado Sun, and Laura Pritchett, freelance writer for both publications and Director of the MFA in Nature Writing. At this panel, we’ll learn more about the intersection of journalism, the environment, and writing. These two publications are often considered to be the best Colorado has to offer — come hear what's going on in the world of environmental writing today! Crested Butte Mountain Resorts invites students up to the ski area for a relaxing day before classes begin, Sunday, Aug. 23.

Enjoy incredible scenery and new friends at the ski resort that has put this valley on the extreme skiing map. FREE lift tickets and shuttles from Western will be provided.

Tickets will be available at the CBMR base area beginning at 8:45 a.m. Anyone attending will also need to sign a CBMR waiver..SHUTTLES Transportation will leave from the University Center North Entrance at 10:30 & 11 a.m. and return from CBMR at 3:15 & 3:45 p.m. *You may also travel to and from the resort on your own.HIKE TO MT. CRESTED BUTTE Make sure you are on the early shuttle. Come prepared with water, hiking clothes, appropriate footwear (no flip-flops) and a snack. Safety: If there is potential for lightening, do not attempt to summit Mt. Crested Butte.MOUNTAIN BIKING Want to take advantage of some of the best downhill biking in the country? You are more than welcome to take a bike up to CBMR and enjoy the trails. However, you will need to arrange your own transportation to the bike park. Also, please adhere to CBMR Bike Park Safety: It is a biker's responsibility to know and follow CBMR's Mountain Bikers Responsibility Code.
